The Museum of Stefan Żeromski’s School Years is located in a building with educating traditions as long as almost 300 years.
The museum itself was established in 1964 to celebrate the 100th birthday of Stefan Żeromski. Its founder was a curator Aleksandra Dobrowolska. It was her who conceived the idea of museums concerning well known authors with local origins. This heritage was developed by Kazimiera Zapałowa, who successfully managed the institution for years.
For the writer’s 140th birthday, in 2004, the permanent exhibition was changed and has been attracting many visitors ever since. Dr Anna Myślińska is a curator and a current manager of the museum.
The museum’s premises, built between 1724 and 1727, started their life as a preliminary school for the Theological Seminary. The school was founded by Bishop Felicjan Szaniawski. Later, it was transformed into the State Secondary School for Boys, where, apart from Stefan, such renowned Polish writers as Adolf Dygasiński, Bolesław Prus, and Gustaw Herling-Grudziński were educated.Since 1989, the Museum of Stefan Żeromski’s School Years has also housed Stefan Żeromski’s Association, an organisation which awards Andrzej Radek Grants every year. The association is currently chaired by Andrzej Maćkowski.
