The Stefan Żeromski Museum
It is housed in the historic building where the writer attended school – a place inextricably linked to his youth and education. In 1964, on the 100th anniversary of the birth of the author of The Labors of Sisyphus, a centre commemorating the life and work of Stefan Żeromski was established on the initiative of curator Aleksandra Dobrowolska.
Originally designed as a school, the building where the museum is now housed was erected on the initiative of Konstanty Felicjan Szaniawski, Bishop of Kraków, between 1724 and 1727. It was here that Stefan Żeromski was educated between 1874 and 1886. A number of distinguished experts – Prof. Stanisław Lorentz, Prof. Henryk Markiewicz, Prof. Kazimierz Wyka and the writer’s daughter Monika Żeromska – were actively involved in the museum’s development. The centre was officially opened on 28 June 1965, and its guiding principle and cultural significance were highlighted during the opening ceremony.
A biographical and literary exhibition
It is situated on the first floor of the building and covers the childhood and school years of the author of The Faithful River. It presents, in a chronological order, the history of the building, the school and the house, the history of the Żeromski family, and the period during which the author of Spring to Comewas a student. The final section of the exhibition is devoted to the writer’s creative work and features valuable artefacts such as letters, manuscripts and first editions of his works. The museum’s collection also includes a unique gramophone record featuring a recording of Stefan Żeromski’s voice.
